A 14-year USG employee who ascended to the role of CEO in 2016, Scanlon vividly recalls separate plant visits that helped comprise her “indoctrination to USG.” In both cases, the actions of the employees personified the organization’s safety culture. In Scanlon’s experience, that reality manifested itself early. “Because there is that level of commitment to employees.” This is the kind of place that people recommend for their children, their nieces, to work,” Scanlon said. “We see second and third generations in many of our plants and even in our corporate headquarters. The goal, Smith said, was to test policies already in place and record employees’ comfort in fulfilling them. Many interview questions during the assessments were culture-based, gauging respondents’ knowledge of what they would do if they or a co-worker were injured on the job. … I think it’s something that our employees feel really good about, that they can talk to their friends and families and really get this sense that we really care about them and they really care about each other.”Ī Campbell Award panel performed on-site assessments at USG headquarters, as well as USG facilities in Michigan and Texas, spending approximately one day at each location. “You’ll see T-shirts and jackets that talk about what safety milestone they reached. ![]() “When you visit any of our plants, it’s not just the sign on the door that mentions safety,” Scanlon said. ![]() “They were wholly committed to the company.” Employee dedication to safetyĮmployees exhibit equal enthusiasm for safety, continuing what Scanlon calls “a tremendous long-term history and focus.” Scanlon said 96 percent of USG’s 56 plant locations did not experience a lost-time injury in 2016.Īnd, according to NSC, USG’s lost-time injury rate was 17 times better than the industry average. “By far, just being immersed in their culture, it was clear that every person in that organization was 100 percent behind USG,” Smith said. Download free42 for imac12/31/2023 Maybe one day I will just spend the money for Red Hat, which seems expensive. I know that Cygwin is not a real Linux, and that programs compiled there won't run on true Linuxes, but I have liked it since the distribution includes an absurd number of packages, so I just decided to install them all to be sure I have what I need. Thomas, I do have gcc in Ubuntu (needed it to configure VMware Tools), and it effectively compiles simple text based C programs, but when I get into anything graphical the compiler error output is inscrutable to me. In response to message #2 by Thomas Okken Message #3 Posted by Les Wright on, 2:34 p.m., If I remember correctly, it takes a little configuration twiddling to get the X server going (I don't think it is run by default), and to run the build, you'll need the Mac versions of gcc etc., available for free at you may want to read this document about porting Unix applications to MacOS to get the big picture before you dive in. Just so you know - if you plan on running programs in Free42 on the Mac, I'd recommend compiling the Unix version for MacOS it will run as an X client on the Mac desktop. Unfortunately, Jeff Dionne hasn't gotten around to fixing this yet, and I don't have a Mac so I can't do it either. The Free42 MacOS widget is missing some event handling code, which causes running programs on it to fail. ![]() The smart money is on missing development libraries and headers, though (in Fedora, those are typically recognizable by package names including the word devel) - from what I recall of the few occasions I played with Ubuntu's Live CDs, development stuff is not part of the basic Ubuntu install. ) However, if you send me the output from make I might still be able to figure out which packages are missing, though I wouldn't be able to tell you their exact names. I'm not familiar with Ubuntu - I use Fedora myself and I'm too stubborn to change, the hype be damned. Message #2 Posted by Thomas Okken on, 12:42 p.m., Re: more iMac rambling, this time a little more OT With this new computer, I have been neglecting my new 35s! The Free42 Mac widget is not bad, but I must say I prefer the appearance of the Windows and Linux versions. Unfortunately the 2GB sticks are still pretty expensive, so it will be a while before I upgrade to 3GB or 4GB. It would be nice to have more RAM available to dedicate to the virtual machine. My Apple retailer has extra 1GB RAM in stock, and it is pretty cheap too! I am finding that 1GB is still a bit sluggish if I want to get good performance out of my XP virtual machine. ![]() I have learned that my new iMac has an empty memory slot-the 1GB in situ. I am really liking this Ubuntu too-pretty spiffy for a free OS! ![]() I have been able to compile the Free42 code in VC++ too, and it is indeed fun to tinker with some of the math algorithms. Keep in mind I am a real Linux virgin, but still I would like to learn more. If anyone has any advice about compiling Thomas' source code in Ubuntu Linux 32-bit I would be grateful. I know there is nothing wrong with the source code files-I happen to have an overly complete implementation of Cygwin (i.e., more packages than I will ever use) in my XP virtual machine and Thomas's code compiles beautifully there by simply typing make or make -e BCD_MATH=1 in both gtk and motif subdirs. Alas, I haven't been able to compile his source code myself in that OS-I am assuming I am missing in Ubuntu some key packages and libraries. I find that Thomas Okken's Free42 precompiled Linux binaries run beautifully-both Motif and GTK versions. "The fact that people picked up on that as a concern, I kind of felt was weird," Dunn says. ![]() Since Guitar Hero Live's reveal in April, Dunn says there's been one surprising reaction from fans: Players wondering if the game is going to be hard enough. "We want everyone to get the same experience, regardless of the platform they're playing on," Coppard says. It's the same guitar, just a different wireless dongle for each platform. Plus, Coppard and Nate say the new guitar plays the same across Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Wii U. Honestly, I don't think we've ever really had issues where we thought, 'Well, this is something we need to improve upon.'" "Only once did we ever really get a version that we felt had that latency and really wasn't quite what we were looking for, and that was just a matter of tuning some new components in the guitar. Meaning, there is no latency, Dunn promises. to just pick up Guitar Hero Live and just be brilliant at itĪnother similarity to previous Guitar Hero controllers is the power source - the new guitars run on two AA batteries - and the latency. "We needed to supply veteran players with a new challenge, so as you step up through the difficulty levels, by layering in both rows of buttons, the complexity really ramps up and can give a real challenge even to people who've mastered the old Guitar Hero games." We didn't want players who were experts at the old Guitar Hero games. "We didn't want players who were experts at the old Guitar Hero games, we didn't want them to just pick up Guitar Hero Live and just be brilliant at it straight-away," Dunn adds. Basically: If it isn't broken, don't fix it. ![]() "We didn't want to change anything that we weren't improving," Dunn says. We noted a few other things that felt familiar when we tried out Guitar Hero Live in April, including the weight and shape of the guitar. Plus, the spacing between the buttons themselves is the same as in the old controllers. The space between the buttons and the classic strumming bar is the same, Dunn says. These are some of the changes to the guitar, but the similarities to previous editions are just as important to Dunn and Coppard: The new design needs to feel fresh to veteran players, but still familiar. A menu button may not be the sexiest aspect of the new guitar, but it's an important part of the redesign, Coppard says: "I guess you can get the fact of how fundamental it is to the game by the fact that it's influenced the design of the controller and it has an easy-access button." That last one is primarily used in Guitar Hero TV, a new mode for the series featuring a stream of playable music videos. On the guitar's body, there's a long Hero Power button at the base of the strings, serving as an update to the game's previous "Star Power" bonus-points system, plus a whammy bar and a menu button.
